According to popular legends red rose is considered to be a favorite flower of Venus – the Roman mythological Goddess of Love and Beauty. Hence the red Rose came to be associated with love and romance.
Historians believe that the tradition of giving red rose on Valentine’s Day became popular in the 1700s when Charles II of Sweden introduced the Persian custom of “the language of flowers” to Europe.
Books giving details about meanings of particular flowers were published which demonstrated to people how entire conversations could be carried out using just the flowers.
Poets and romantics at heart also eulogized red rose as a symbol of love, passion and beauty that helped to create strong association of rose with love and Valentine’s Day.

Legends influencing Valentines Day Celebration in Middle Ages:
One very popular legend of Valentine’s Day states that the festival originated from the Feast of Lupercalia – a fertility festival celebrated in mid February by ancient Roman during pagan times. The festival paired young boys and girls through a lottery system who would fall in love and marry.
Another legend states that a priest called St Valentine lived in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Valentine defied the orders of Claudius order that banned engagements and marriages in Rome and secretly married young boys and girls. Saint Valentine was executed by Claudius on February 14, 498 AD. Over the period of time St Valentine became the patron saint of lovers and they began to celebrate his martyrdom by expressing love for their beloved and exchanging love notes.

Did you know that…
Historical archives talk of at least three different individuals known by the name of Saint Valentine and associated with Valentine’s Day celebration of February 14.
Some scholars even talk of the presence of as many as seven Saint Valentine all of whom lived in the Third Century and apparently died on February 14.
The legends say that the saints were all martyred for their faith and have been recognized by the Catholic Church.
Some scholars say that these saints were not separate individuals and are likely to be one and the same. Since these saints lived during the reign of the same Roman emperor and are believed to have died on the same day, this assumption seems to have some validity.
Today Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, mostly in the West, although it remains a working day in all of them. People in love give gifts to each other on this day to express their feelings.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all lovers of the world! Have a great romantic day!
My gift to you is a bouquet of roses:
Rose is one of the most popular flower and one of the most powerful symbol of Valentine’s Day. Since time immemorial rose flower has been a favorite of poets and romantics at heart. For them, the lovely rose stand for beauty, passion and love.
There is an interesting story behind the legend of Valentine’s Day Rose. It is said that once a beautiful maiden by the name of Rodanthe was pursued by a number of impassioned suitors. In their desperate pursuit the lovers broke the doors of Rodanthe’s house. This enraged goddess Diana. She turned Rodanthe into a flower and her suitors into thorns.
According to a popular legend in Rome once Cupid was carrying a vase of sweet nectar to the Gods on Mount Olympus and some nectar spilled on the ground. From the spot where the nectar fell emerged the beautiful Rose flower.
An interesting point to notice is that if the letters of the word ‘rose’ are rearranged, it comes out to Eros – the God of Love. Red roses are also considered to be a symbol of love and passion and the favorite flower of Venus – the Goddess of Love.
